Peter Martell is a correspondent for Agence France-Presse based in Nairobi, Kenya, covering the East Africa and Indian Ocean region.
He was previously based in South Sudan in the three key years running up to its historic independence, reporting for the BBC and AFP from the capital Juba, one of very few foreign reporters to be based long-term in the war-damaged region.
He has covered breaking news across the Horn and East Africa since 2005, from a peace process with Uganda and its brutal Lord's Resistance Army rebels, to Somali and Darfuri rebel meetings, to bloody post-election crises in Kenya and Ethiopia. He has also covered elections in Somaliland and Zimbabwe. He was the AFP and BBC correspondent in Eritrea from 2006 to 2008, when in Reporters Sans Frontières' annual rankings, Asmara dropped below North Korea as the world's worst nation for press freedom. He spent a year living and working as a journalist in Yemen, and also works as a journalist trainer.
He began working as a reporter for a news agency in Edinburgh, before moving to the Scotland on Sunday and The Scotsman newspapers. He is married, and has been adopted by a Juba street dog. He is not to be confused with the Twin Peaks character Pete Martell, nor the Spaghetti Western legend Peter Martell.
